The Greatest Story: History

Hey everyone!

I hope your Thursday is going well. I went to go see the fourth Matrix earlier today and while I enjoyed it, I understand people’s gripes with the film. It feels like it wants to be something new, but it also feels trapped by its past. Speaking of the past, let’s jump into today’s topic and talk about it!

I loved reading about history growing up and even now as an adult, I still love it. Living in New England has solidified the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as my favorite period to read about. I couldn’t learn enough about the American Revolution and everything that led up to that moment in history. I even took a class in college that covered colonial history leading up to the formation of the union and the politics that fed into it. I think what I was first drawn to was how familiar yet different the period felt. It felt like there was more to my home than meets the eye and lit a desire to see more of New England. With my time freeing up, I think I would like to use it to see more of this region that I’m sad to say I’ve had only a few occasions to explore.

I should note that anything from the medieval period fascinates me as well. The Hundred Years’ War and the crusades are some of my favorite points from this time. The story of Joan of Arc – a young peasant girl who played a pivotal role in changing the tides of war and left such an impression that people still talk about her centuries after her death. Recently, I have found inspiration for some of my work in William the Conqueror and his exploits. It is only an early storyboard but once I have finished one of the series that I am currently working on I would like to share this story sprouting from the accomplishments of this king of England.

Aside from the previously discussed time periods I also have a fond spot for ancient Greece and Rome. I have to say between the two I think I prefer Rome and its conquests and eventual downfall. From republic to empire and all the turmoil, Rome’s story is magnificent and tragic. I would like to give more time to study ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

To wrap things up, do any of you like history and if so what period? If there’s anything historical you think I should give some time to read into, feel free to leave it in a comment. Have a great one!

Best,

Aaron Kirby
