In the Grasp of Fantasy

Hey everyone!
Here’s to a great Thursday! To kick this post off I want to ask all of you a question. What is your favorite genre to read and how did you get into it? Please, let me know in the comments! I’m sure mine is obvious at this point, but fantasy is my go-to. I also enjoy a good science fiction story. When I was a kid, I remember The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett being a favorite of mine alongside The Hobbit and a dash of Harry Potter for good measure. Through my teenage years I had the pleasure of reading epics like The Odyssey and The Illiad. This is also when A song of Ice and Fire would sink its claws into me. I even enjoyed most of the television series, despite its horrific ending, let’s hope the prequel turns out to be solid.
Further cementing fantasy as my genre of choice was growing up watching The Lord of the Rings films and many others like DragonHeart from 1996 and the 2007 film Beowulf. I feel the need to say that not every film was a masterpiece, in fact, I would say many weren’t. However, I have always enjoyed being brought to another world and watching a fantastical adventure and if the film or series has a great soundtrack then it makes it all the better. Looking back and reflecting on it, I think the fantastical elements and the music is why I fell in love with The Lord of the Rings as a kid and as I grew older, I began to appreciate more and more of the talent that played a part in the making of the films.
Speaking of series that I enjoy watching, I’m looking forward to watching season two of The Witcher on Netflix tomorrow evening. If you haven’t had the chance to check it out, I fully recommend that you do! I admit when I first saw the teaser trailer for season one, I thought it looked awful. I’m happy to say that I was wrong. Another series that has caught my attention is Amazon’s Wheel of Time. I have yet to watch it as I’ve heard it has some egregious deviations from the books, but it has pushed me to getting the first three audiobooks. If I enjoy them, then like most audiobooks that I like I will end up getting the physical copy.
Also, before I finish up, I want to ask one more thing. As I’m always looking for more novels and series to get into, is there anything that you would recommend? It doesn’t have to be fantasy either as I would love to experience more from other genres as well!
Best,
Aaron Kirby
